LEARNING ENGLISH IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Basically, there are two kinds of text learnt in Junior High School:
  • FUNCTIONAL TEXT
  • A functional text is a writing that is used for everyday information, and that when read, conveys the correct message as to what is being demonstrated on the script. 
  • Some examples of functional text are: announcement, greeting card, invitation, sign/notice/warning,memo/short message, letter/e-mail, advertisement, pamphlet/leaflet/brochure/booklet, banner/poster, note, shopping list, list of menu, schedule/timetable/to do list, table/chart/graph/diagram, map/atlas.
  • GENRE
  • Genre is a particular kind of text, with particular conventions and generic patterns linked to the purpose of the text.
  • There are 5 genre learnt at Junior High School.
  • Procedure text. It is used to help readers, how to do or make something completely through a series of steps.
  • Descriptive text. This text is used to describe a particular person, place or thing in detail.
  • Recount text. Recount text retells something/event/experience that happened in the past. 
  • Narrative text. It is a kind of text that is used to amuse/entertain the readers.
  • Report text. A report text presents information about a subject.
